Are gutters and fascia included in your replacement roof proposal?
Clarify the roof edge before work starts: gutter removal, fascia condition, downspout discharge and finish work may involve different scopes.

Quick answer: Ask the proposal to distinguish roof covering, edge details, gutters, downspouts and fascia. Name who removes and reinstalls each component, and how newly exposed damage will be handled.

Identify what “roof replacement” includes
Gutters, fascia and roof-edge materials meet at the edge of the house, but they are not interchangeable line items. Ask the provider to list which components stay, which are removed temporarily and which are replaced. A verbal statement that the crew will “take care of the edge” is difficult to compare across proposals.
Use ground-level photographs to identify missing or visibly damaged components without reaching from a ladder. Ask the contractor to evaluate their condition professionally. If removal is needed to inspect concealed material, record that limitation and the process for approving additional work.
Look beyond the gutter length
A gutter scope can involve outlets, downspouts, attachment and discharge routing as well as the visible channel. GAF’s technical bulletin explains that concentrated discharge from gutters or downspouts onto shingles can contribute to damage. Ask the provider to review where water is directed, especially where a higher roof drains onto a lower one.
That bulletin is a reason to ask about a detail, not a diagnosis of your roof. Do not assume every stain or area of granule loss has the same cause. Request a documented explanation of the existing arrangement and any proposed change, with responsibility assigned to the appropriate provider.
Separate carpentry and finish work
If fascia or related woodwork needs attention, ask whether the roofing contract includes the carpentry, disposal, preparation and finish coating. Confirm who selects the finish and whether another trade must return. A material allowance alone may not describe the completed result you expect.
At closeout, compare the agreed component list with the completed work and retain any approved changes. Observe drainage only from a safe location after ordinary rain, and report concerns to the responsible provider. Dallas Texas Roofing Services supports replacement referrals; the provider’s inspection and written scope should determine what your house needs.
| Component | Included action | Responsibility question |
|---|---|---|
| Gutters and outlets | Keep, remove or replace | Who reinstalls and checks discharge? |
| Fascia | Inspect and define any work | Who handles carpentry and finish? |
| Roof edge | Assembly-specific detail | Who coordinates adjoining components? |
- List edge components separately.
- Ask where downspouts discharge.
- Include finish work or identify its exclusion.
Frequently asked questions
Does a roof replacement automatically include new gutters?
Do not assume it does. The written proposal should specify gutter work and any related removal, reinstallation or changes.
Who paints replaced fascia?
The proposal should name the party responsible for preparation and finish work or clearly exclude it. Do not assume a carpentry allowance includes finishing.
